Walking around a shop today found a shelf load of boxes with chess pieces only. They are solid wood and look good. Retailing at only £2 they'd do alright on a handmade board if no-one else knew you had cheated with the pieces!

Made this one a few years ago, Maple & Walnut strips glued onto a mdf board.

One thing you really should take into consideration is the direction of the board in relation to the way the pieces are set up. If you look at The Shark picture the board is incorrectly set up, unlike Richs which is correct. h1 should always be a white square.

Also if you intend to teach anyone to play the game of chess or play beginners, then probably a good idea to stay way from novelty pieces, the game is hard enough as it is without having to work out what each piece is.

Not everyone cup of tea, but both players using a chess clock really makes a difference to a game of chess so maybe you might want incorporate a place for one in your design.

Take a look at this table, its definitely got the wow factor
