I’ve got a couple of pruning saws, Wolf & Fiskars, which both need resharpening but a triangular file is not suitable for the steep gullets. I tried a diamond needle file but it is too small.

I found this video on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs6v2aPYtfI where the guy uses a ‘Knife file’ which seems ideally suited to the task. Are they available in this country or is something else suitable?

Regards Keith

You need a Feather File they are usually used for Japanese saws.

Pete's suggestion would work, and so would something like this - https://www.cromwell.co.uk/KEN0302610K - available in a range of sizes and cuts. They're also available as 'precision files', but usually at rather greater cost. They're used by engineering fitters and toolmakers for cleaning out grooves, slots and the like; I've used them in the past to clean up heavily burred and damaged large screwthreads when we didn't have a suitable die available. Any decent engineer's suppliers should have a few in stock.

As it happens, I've just ordered some saw files and noticed the 'feather edge saw files' that I think are being used/referred to. Have a look at Fine Tools/Dieter Schmid's site here.

You may get a fair bit of improvement by running the two flat faces a few times on a fine diamond stone or similar, without doing the tooth gullets ? Obviously not as thorough but you may be pleasantly surprised ?

Cheers, Paul

Have you checked they're not hardpoint? Most modern saws, including pruning saws, are, and hence not fileable.

Neither of them have teeth of a different colour so guess they aren't. hard point. The needle file was removing metal but it was too small.
