Finished today a segmented oak bowl.
Diameter 310mm, still in his natural color.
This bowl is made for the parents of my son-in-law.
The segmented bowl is made from an oak table which had belongs to a recently passed away mother of my son-in-law's mother.
So as a memory of her mother.
Cheers, Ad

This is how I did it. (fully handwork)
1) design

2) cutting segments

3) segments for one ring (2x6 = 12)

4) glued half rings

5) flatten half rings by using a handplaner

7) making fit segmented rings

Very nice Ad. And a great keepsake for your son in laws mother.

You have a great deal of patience to produce these segmented pieces Ad, much more than I do :D

Good control of the joints and segment positions Ad.
I see you use what looks like PVA adhesive, do you get any joint creep with time?
Are your angles/edges true enough for gluing straight from the mitre saw?

Yes Chas, it's PVA woodglue, use this glue for many years with not any problems.
This mitre saw works very well, only you have to take your time.

Ad this is an interesting project and very well done. The bowl looks lovely.

I am also interest in your home-made chuck - could you start a new thread showing its construction please? (I am presently making a compression chuck myself)

Ad, I get the impression from the pictures that you have made a number of other tools and jigs besides the chuck. I admire your patience, skill and ingenuity, not only in making the segmeted bowl but in doing so much of the work by hand. You are an example to us all. Bravo!

Ad, as others have said this is excellent work, not only the wonderful piece but also the chuck and ingenuity. I have much to learn, that's for sure! Good stuff, keep it going. cheers Steve

Dave, here is the design drawing of my home made chuck.
I used parts (flange and house) of a safetychuck from a slitting line, which I got from a factory. The inside cones are made from oak.
I devided the inner cone in three parts with a guiding system.
Think the drawing speak for itself. If neccesary I have more detail drawings if you like it to recieve them.
Best regards, Ad

Ad

thanks for the drawing of the chuck.

I have now completed work on my bowl (150-220mm) chuck - works well.

Next I would like to make a 3 or 4 jaw self-cetering chuck for diameters approximately 25-150mm. I am still exploring various designs

Dave, I'm glad your bowl chuck works well, I'm always very interested in the creations of other members, would like it to see your bowl chuck, if possible.

That's a lovely segmented bowl.

I am always rather awestruck by segmented turnings - the amount of planning and methodical cutting of accurate angles required, and then the careful glueing and clamping before you get it anywhere near a lathe. There are so many stages involved where something could go wrong and ruin the whole thing.

I am especially impressed that you cut all the parts by hand with a mitre saw!
