I'm not normally known for being reckless with money but at last Thursday's boot sale I threw caution to the wind and bought a Sedgley S4 plane for £4. It had a little surface rust and about 98% of the paintwork was intact. It came complete with the obligatory splodges of paint on the handle.

When I dismantled it for cleaning a small compression spring fell out of somewhere. The only place I can think of was out of the hole into which the lever cap screw goes.

Is this usual or is it a previous owner's addition?

There is a possibility that it was lodged somewhere in the sawdust under or beside the frog.

I'm not familiar with that model but I can't see any reason why it should need a spring. If the lever cap holds the iron in place and the plane works, I think you just got a freebie that will come in useful for something else, one day, if you can find it!

The Sedgley S4 is exactly the same as the Record or Stanley no. 4. The spring is in a place of safety, under the lever cap screw. :D
