Scrub plane blade?

I had a piece of wood with very high spots. I don't
have a scrub plane. I took a standard stanley blade
and worked it on sandpaper. Dont have a grinder. Took
quite some time and the radius did not look perfect. I sharpened
on 1000 grit only.

The result is quit nice. Thick shavings without much
effort.

a scraper plane video on youtube. I meant scrub plane. Will
try to change the title.

Yes I have no dedicated workbench. So yes that is a cloth.

Not sure how thick the shavings should be BB, but I
just tried again.

I could go a bit thicker, but need much more pushing pressure.

Wowza - those look much thicker than the stuff in your first photo!

BB, I had a shaving of 0.70mm, WOW, but turned out the shaving
was folded double haha.

There were a few thicker shavings in the first video, but also
many medium shavings. I think the thickest were about
0.25mm in the first picture.

The wood is maple by the way.

I've just had a play with my converted jack plane which has a 100mm radius ground onto the blade. The LN scrub has a 75mm radius. I'm getting chips of 1mm quite comfortably, planing obliquely across the board.

Looking at the picture of your blade, the radius is pretty gentle which makes it hard to get thick chips/shavings as they end up very wide and it is hard work.

As someone who was grinding by hand on abrasive paper until recently I appreciate the difficulty of doing this by hand though. Do you know anyone with a bench grinder?

Thanks for the information Mike. If you look at the first picture you will see 2 dark
thick lines on the plane blade. That was supposed to be the radius, but I quickly
figured it would take a huge amount of time doing it on sandpaper so I "chose" a gentler
radius.

I don't know anybody with a grinder. I had a one, but threw it away haha. Did not
like the fact that it was so loud. I might buy a new one. Perhaps one with a single
wheel because I like it compact. Anybody got a suggestion?

I have a Creusen Grinder with a 6 inch wheel bought from axminster but it's twin wheel I'm afraid. http://www.axminster.co.uk/creusen-hp7150ts-powerline-grinder

It's not too noisy.

I was advised to make sure I got one with a friable aluminium oxide wheel to reduce the risk of overheating the steel. I spent a while looking at cheaper grinders and replacing the wheel but in the end went for the no-faff option (the person making the recommendation had the Creusen).
