So, from what I have read, the make to buy I'd Hegner.

It seems to make sense ,if your on budget, is to find a second hand one on ebay.

I will be wanting to cut aluminium up to 5mm thick so should I be looking at variable speed or will single speed be ok

Variable speed would be an absolute must for 5mm ally and even then you'd be struggling keeping a scroll saw blade cool enough not to damage it. What sort of work are you doing? If you're not wanting to do pierced cuts or super-tight turns I'd seriously consider a band saw.
