Hello there!

Anyone here who has experience or theoretical knowledge regarding the making of saws from scrapers? I am currently thinking about making a small dovetail-saw from a scraper (just for fun) and was wondering if the scraper steel is hard enough. Old saws are sometimes recommended for making scrapers from, but vice versa?
As to the catalogue from Dick.biz scrapers have a hardness of about 50 HRC, Japanese scraper steel being sold there 54 HRC. Would this be enough for saw teeth keeping their sharpness for an acceptable time?

Would be happy to hear your comments, suggestions and experiences.

Regards
Philipp

Philipp, I believe at least one (and possibly more) of the part-time sawmakers on Woodnet have used a scraper for a blade at some time. No reason in the world why it shouldn't work as far as I can see. The only drawback being limited length. Funnily enough I was tossing the same idea round recently, and wondering about the easiest way to do the back.

Cheers, Alf

Actually it was Rob Lee who mentioned that scraper blades could be used - the type used for scraping floors. I went out and bought a couple at my local borg. Perfect for backsaws. They are sold (here) in 10" and 14" lengths. These are blued, but polish to silver. I can't recall the thickness of the 14", but the 10" is the same as a LN dovetail saw blade. Approx $9 AUD each.

maybe Philly could make one from a cabinet scraper to satisfy his desire for a specialist 4" dovetail saw.

I know I've seen 'em made from taping knives over on WoodCentral now I come to think about it, although it's getting harder to find non-stainless steel ones these days. On the whole, after a bit, it'd probably be just as easy to buy the raw spring steel, at whch point it's just one fatal step to turning into an addicted saw maker and then you can kiss woodworking goodbye...

Cheers, Alf

As far as I know, hand/card scrapers are usually supplied by saw manufacturers and are exactly the same as their saw blade material, with identical hardness.
