looks good but what damage to the saw table? why does the blade retract below table?

There's been lots of past discussion on this here, the latest was only days ago.

Use the Search function to find the threads, also find the SawStop videos on YouTube (from the maker/designer), and their web site. Both explain the mechanism very well.
