A few hours treatment with Shield Technology Chemicals (from Workshop Heaven) resulted in this:

Now needs some paint - what's the best type to use?

Black enamel or smooth hammerite. mask it up, I stick dowels in the screw holes, and apply a couple of thin coats.

Whats the woodwork like.

Pete

Or you could follow the example of Jimi or Derek and use asphaltum - search for previous mentions. Current sunshine should cure it nicely!

Hammerite seems easier to obtain and I think I have some if hasn't gone solid?

The varnish on the wood has disappeared so that has saved a bit of work. They are in good condition, so a light clean up and oiling and they should be OK?

If the sole is flat and everything else Ok, might buy a new QS iron etc for it, then it will be a keeper - not that I need anymore planes? :)

5 1/2 is a good size plane, my favourite size.
