Although I've been dying from Ebola for that past few days it hasn't stopped me thinking about my router table build. I want to add some t-track and/or mitre track to allow me to use things like feather boards, coping sleds etc. (which I don't yet own / haven't made yet). Is there some magic (standard) distance I should be putting the track from the router bit?

Entirely up to you.
But I suggest a T track a few inches from the edge of the router plate to allow you to fix end stops for blind routing and feather boards.
And a mitre slot further away to allow you to run the mitre fence along the front of the table with reasonable sized pieces of wood.

i bought the bright orange track from axminster (pause for gasps of horror from Jacob et all over cost). Its extremely well made and even better looking.
(other tracks are available, as long as rutlands isnt out of stock)
