Rocklite vs Ebony

Hello,

I am a cue maker, and I generally use ebony for the butts.

Today my supplier spoke to me about Rocklite as a substitute.

Has anybody used this before?

What are your opinions about it?

Well the website certainly talks highly of it :-D

After reading through this thread last week one thing I'm sure of, we shouldn't be buying ebony (and many other tropical hardwoods) any more: taylor-guitars-the-state-of-ebony-bob-taylor-video-t99257.html

High denisty and predictable grain seem to be the top priorities.

High density and predictable grain seem to be the top priorities.

I can understand density, but why worry about grain - a sharp tool (or even sand paper...) will deal with any working issues, and wild grain is pretty!

If there is a practical reason for wanting uniformity, a plastic or composite would seem an ideal choice.

It is the density, smoothness in your hand, and it also adds weight to the cue.

Snooker cues regularly experience a wide range of moisture and heat variation during normal use and straighness of the grain is the only thing that prevents them warping from one day to the next. Being a manufactured product the grain in Rocklite is 100% predictable which actually makes it superior to ebony for any application (including guitar necks) where environmental conditions don't always remain stable.
