It's a job to 'plan' any particular effect, the grain direction of the planking and the curved surface when turning all conspire to alter the image with each cut. You are not actually seeing the grain width but the exposure of the grain boundaries of a piece from near the centre of the log.
You can see how the grain boundaries would be shown in a totally different manner dependant on whether a curved turning followed the grain direction (the lid) or across the direction.
That's exactly what I was thinking. the way you have turned it. the borders of the grain get further apart the nearer you get to the outside of the log. You managed to get it just right on the inside of the lid
Its almost like an eye looking at the person who lifts the lid
