Help me out chaps. My wrought iron railings have started to rust and the paint is flaking off. What's an effective way of cleaning it up before repainting? Is navy jelly any good? What top coat?

The traditional method is a chipping hammer, heavy duty scraper and wire brush. Not as bad as it sounds, but does need a bit of patience.

Once cleaned off, a phosphoric acid rust preventative primer (auto accessory shop) or 'red lead' primer (it isn't lead-based any more) would be a good first coat on bare metal, followed by exterior grade undercoat and colour coat. Painting railings is slow and fiddly, but satisfying once done.

The other possibility is get them shotblasted by a mobile operator, (or unbolt them and take them to a firm that does shotblasting) then prime/undercoat etc.

That's what I did with a (quite fancy) wrought iron gate.

The thought of cleaning it by any manual method is terrifying.

A local company did a full blast/prime/paint for reasonable cost.

Some of them do powder coating as well, definately worth a look

I had a set of double gates (12' opening width and 3' high) at my old house blasted and then powder coated by a company in Cannock. I think the whole job cost around £150 including the hinge rails.
