I have a record 53 1/2 QR vice with the little steel dog on the front that you can adjust upwards.

heres the question...
Should that steel go as low as the vice face?
Even at its lowest adjustment, the dog sits over a 1/4" proud of the bench surface.

Its a nuisance when I have large flat panels on the bench and I am considering cutting it down flush, but maybe theres a reason for it that I'm not aware of?

Mine hasn't a dog, but maybe they're designed that the top of the vice is set down from the surface of the bench? Mine is capped - the strip capping it, the liner and the bench surface are planed flat as one. The dog would then need to be slightly longer.

As phil.p says. You need to lower your vice by 20mm then fix a 20mm capping piece to your vice liner.

No, I need to hacksaw a 1/4" off the steel.

a fiver cheaper and 10 hours quicker. :p

Does the vice not scratch things you're working on, if it's flush with the bench top ? Seems a bit of a bodge job...

Take it out and clean out the bottom of the socket. They get filled with saw dust.

Easiest thing to do is remove it completely Bob. You don't need it. Then post it to me because my vice is missing that bit.

Replace with a wooden one.
Much kinder to sharp blades, and blunt knuckles.

JOB DONE.
The vice is a couple mm below the bench surface, the peg was a good 6mm proud of the bench. I bought the vice new so the hole wasnt blocked.
maybe if I had known from the start I would have fitted the vice lower, but my bench is made from square iron tube with a plate welded to it for the vice, and then a planked surface, so much to much hard work to modify everything.
