I picked up a no. 4 Record plane at a car boot sale recently and have only realised that the lateral adjusting lever is missing. Is this a part that could be purchased and replaced or should I be looking for a replacement frog? It needs a bit of cleaning and some work sharpening the blade but other than that it's perfect. I was going to go all out and completely strip and finish it but don't know what I would need.
You'll have to bear with me. I am a complete novice with hand tools. I worked in a joinery for 13 years but didn't use hand tools much. It was all spindle moulders, tenoners and such. I was laid off a year and a half ago but missed flat work and I want to start back into it. It'll be a hobby along with my woodturning but I haven't got many hand tools and don't know what else I'll need.

You can adjust the lateral position of the blade by gently tapping one side of it or the other with a small hammer. Indeed, with wooden bench planes and non-adjuster infill planes, that's the only lateral adjustment method available! That would get the plane working, so you could see whether further remedial work would be worthwhile.

Later, it may be worth contacting some of the secondhand dealers; they often have bits and bobs of spares they don't bother to list on their websites. There's a good list of dealers on the Cornish Workshop website.

Keep your eye on the boot sales - you might pick up one with a cracked sole or missing handles or something for a quid or two. I've had planes that were made up from five different ones. Frankenplanes!

I'd look for a new frog - they don't (normally!) get damaged, and a rusty plane, with a missing blade and broken casting (but instact frog) should be pennies.

Eventually...

I've got a loose frog you can have. It's the cheaper sort with a one piece folded metal lever arm, but it would make your plane usable. PM me your address.
