My record dml320 has a handwheel on the outboard side with two grubscrews, so I took it off to have a look. The spindle isnt threaded but has a single flat area where one of the grub screws bites. (M33 x3.5 on the usual side)

The lathe has reverse direction for sanding on the usual side but as I'm likely to be finishing most work in a chuck without tailstock I fear this might just unscrew the chuck!

So outboard sanding might be nice. I rang Record and the tech team spoke to the salesteam and they decided to tell me that the lathe isnt designed for it, but not why. Maybe its an excuse to deny any possiblefuture warranty claims (5 year warranty on mechanical parts) or maybe its just that there's no outboard thread or even that the spindle indexing knob would be in the way or who knows what. Might the outboard sideof the spindle be too weak ? Anyone with real knowledge?

Anyway .. I wondered if anyone can suggest a faceplate or similar that can fit onto theoutboard non-threaded spindle and could be used to facilitate sanding (one that stands far enough away not to hit the indexing pin) then I can try to have another convo with Record about why not!

thanks

Found that one of my adapters from the grinder (to take white disks) would fit on the outboard side of the lathe andhence allow outboard sharpening. Called Record..they say that would invalidate the warranty (not clear which aspect of the warranty or why). If anyone ever gets to change the spindle on an m33 Record dl 'xxx' I'd love to know what the vulnerability might be! Still, rules is rules and I'd like to keep my warranty, so I guess I'll stick with my milbro grinder/polisher.
