I want to cut varied depth \ width rebates
there seems to be so many different planes

is there a best one?

i have a router that can do this..but would prefer a manual option

Steve

A router plane. Depends a bit on the application- this is useful for housings and such like- on an edge rebate it is less useful. Cheap enough to have one in the workshop anyway

Moving fillister plane. Either Stanley/Record/Veritas metal ones, or wooden... Philly makes nice ones, or available on s/h market

this is just for edge rebates

I know but in my defence I didn't know whether you meant specifically for that one job or for a bit more general use to replace a powered router.

That said, they are handy things and I would still recommend getting one. That and a record 043.

i must admit i like the wooden fillister ones

but a 778 may be the better option now i have looked closer

Stanley 78 are best value by far. They are a bit unfashionable which makes them cheaper but they work very well.

I just bought a Mosley and sons moving fillister on the bay for £15 and a few pence, all it needed was a new piece of boxing. Only took me an hour to replace. Works fantastic, I do also have a Stanley 78 but the woodie has so much more "feel" to it if that makes sense.

just got to find a user now

sure i have walked past so many of these at boot fairs :(

I have a record 778, I think which may be like a Stanley 78. Can't fault it. Cuts great rebates, even in knotty redwood. Quieter and less messy than an electrified routing machine!

The 778 has a more secure fence (twin rails) and a proper screw depth adjuster.
