Whilst looking into new lathes, I've noticed that several seem to have different tapers in the head and tailstock, IE 1MT in the headstock and 2MT in the tail. Is there any particular reason for this? Does it benefit the lathe in some way or is i just a cost cutting measure from the factory?

I guess what I'm really asking is, should I steer clear of these lathes or are they ok?

Cheers,

Adam

An in use niggle and cost implication you can do without, also an indication that the headstock spindle is smaller diameter or with smaller spindle nose thread with insufficient room for a No. 2 Morse taper.
