No, they are not at all that bad!
I personally don't like fat pens but this is a personal thing.
They appear well finished, ( you didn't say
what finish you put on them) which would indicate how long the finish would last.
But unless you are going to engrave on them, for me they are too bland.
I prefer to shape of the Lime pen, and
it, would lend itself to engraving.
The Blackwood one IMO needs some inlay, I did a Sierra in Blackwood and inserted some Aluminium:
Which takes away the plastic look that Ebony and some Blackwoods have.
As far as refills go, they do need to be measured against the existing refill, particularly Rollerballs.
I have just finished a Rollerball for a person who likes blue ink so I went to Smiths and bought a Waterford refill in Blue.
When I fitted in the pen I discovered it was close on 2mm shorter than the the black refill that came with the pen (from Timberbits)
at the nib end. Same shape, but slightly shorter. this meant the nib point didn't protrude as far as the black one.
It still writes, but does spoil the line of the pen somewhat.
