I see our local Tesco has put up the price of using their 'Tyre Machine' to 50p. (their description not mine)

Guess it's in anticipation of inflation.
 
The air is still free, it's the compressing that they're charging for.

I discovered at Morrisons that if you buy £15 of fuel, they give you 3 minutes free compression of their free air.
 
why not go into the store, buy a 12v tyre inflator, a large sheet of paper and a marker pen, then park up near the exit, write on the paper "3 mins of air 25p 50% cheaper than Tesco's",
