I'm heading to Yandles soon to get some interesting wood so will be buying some powder there to try inlays, but in the meantime thought I'd have a go with paint. I did the recessed circle with a parting tool, covered the rest of the face with sanding sealer, painted the recess with black paint and then sanded back. The wood's London plane and it's about 10" diameter.

Looks good so you should not have any problems when you get some inlay material. London Plain is a nice wood to turn and can have some very striking grain, I have a load of it
 
Thanks Dalboy. I really like the painted recess, so did another today. I've been wondering about keeping the turning lines in places so thought I'd give that a go here too.

That London Plain is a surprisingly nice wood. It has hints of elm about it. Like the first one, hate the second.......but it's only a practise piece.
