A little bit of eBaying has seen me with a Hellestadt No.7 and a Stanley No 5 for the grand sum of £45, which seems rather good as they're both in good condition.

Now the tricky part, how do I go about getting them to plane nice and evenly? I've sharpened the blade in the 7, but I think that the blade holding bits aren't in line properly, as it will consistently plane an angle onto the wood.

So does anyone know of a good guide to planes for beginners? Google only seems to come up with restoration guides or guides that assume you know your way around planes already

Thanks

The first things I'd recommend is for you to buy a copies of;

"The Handplane Book" by Garrett Hack

"Planecraft" by Hampton & Clifford

Both provide the information you seek and compliment one another pretty well. Where one may skim over certain detail, the other virtually completes it.

Other sources;

Google "How to set up and use a hand plane/handplane" and you'll find a rake of information available to you. :wink:
