2/3 price of Axminster. I find rutlands fine, manyu have been unhappy about a long wait for delivery

looks like they come with the screws and nuts which crown don't seem to
do these days either.
so where can you get the screws and nuts separately???

paul

I noticed Dieter Schmid sell the crown ones so I'll go for those as I'm ordering some other things from there.

Do the crown handles fit ok (ie> no modifications needed)?
thanks

Try Highland Hardware in Atlanta. They sell small packets of nuts and things starting at $9.95 (about 5 pounds sterling).

Hi Scooby

I bought the Crown handles and I fitted them to my old 4 1/2. They were supplied with a length of threaded studding. I had also bought one of the Stanley spares kits (for example Set 1-12-70 includes lengths of studding, brass handle caps etc.). So I fitted the handles to the plane using some of the spares. The handles are well made and look good and they are very comfortable in use.

To be honest, I didn't strictly need all the spares - the two lengths of studding were the items that most desperately needed replacing. I managed to salvage the brass handle caps and clean them up. So I've got a few bits and pieces for the next restoration job.

Toolbank sell Stanley spares - here's a link:

Hope this helps

Thanks Routermonster. It's good to know the handles are good quality and fit well as I ordered some about 20 minutes ago :D Also ordered a Hock chipbreaker to go with the Hock iron I ordered a few days ago.
Cheers for the link fir the spare parts, that could be useful at some point.

Why are the screw caps and depth adjuster wheel zinc? They look rubbish, brass all the way baby :D

Forgot to say, I retained the original threaded studs and brass caps from the plane. Bit of a nightmare though, as those caps really didn't want to turn and I didn't want to mangle them.

Are the crown handles the same size as the Stanley ones? Just want to make sure the threaded studs on my plane are long enough for the new handles.
Cheers

Ah, rather depends on the age of the Stanley I think. I know the Crown one didn't fit an older Stanley of mine (due to bolt angle rather than size in the main). Modern ones should be okay though, I'd have thought.

Cheers, Alf
