I have just taken delivery of a Stanley type 15 5 1/2. I'd like to tidy up the handles. Can anybody tell me what sort of finish would have been used?

I'd recommend 1/3rd linseed oil 1/3rd white spirit and 1/3rd meths, wipe it on with 0000 steel wool, great for restoring old handles, I use it as a restorative and to clean old tools without removing the patina especially on old wooden planes. My favourite finish for plane handles is brushed on de-waxed shellac, about 3 layers then a hard wax.
