Over time I have had old tools bought from car boots, axes, sledge hammers, breaking bars, spanners etc that, apart from their makers name, are stamped B.R. I've assumed this stood for British Rail. Am I right or wrong?

Quite possibly - might be 'British Railways'. Do you find any stamped GWR? (That's short for Gas Works Railway, Great Way Round, Greasy, Wet and Rusty, God's Wonderful Railway or Great Western Railway depending on your whim, and was the pre-nationalisation company in the Gloucester area. If you find any tools stamped I.K.Brunel, you're really in business!)
