The gadget is (imho, but not Alice's) quite helpful, at least when reshaping teeth.

I used that Bob Wearing gadget to great effect on my first attempt to sharpen my tenon saw, BUT you MUST remember to readjust the angle to do the other side! My saw got 4 or 5 very strange teeth at one end before I noticed!
Then I used it on a R&L Dorchester dovetail saw where I could hardly even see the teeth without an eye glass, but working by feel tooth by tooth from one side only, in rip pattern, I got a better set of teeth than the ones it came with
