Hello.

I am costing a small job which requires a structural frame to support a roof and at the same time carry a patio door and two glazed side panels. Oak has been suggested but I prefer Douglas as it will dry quicker and distort less.

Question. is douglas fir weaker than oak ?. I believe it to be as durable if treated correctly.

Douglas is lighter and cheaper too.

Your thoughts.

Regards

'Sue'

Yes, Douglas Fir is considerably weaker than Oak. If you google you'll find all the engineering specifications and there's really no comparison. Fir might be adequate, but it's difficult to argue that it's better.
