I appreciate that people do use small spaces, but It's not exactly an accurate description... I used to have a "workshop" like that - out the back with the laundry, the market garden and the lake.

I had that first Workmake - it was made of alloy which turned to powder. Might have been the salt in our air in the winter - we used to have to wash the salt of the car windscreen quite regularly.

Don't get me started with estate agents... bunch of arrogant fools whose incompetence knows no bounds.

Yes, they can make the right noises while they pose in their sign-written Toyota iQ's, but can they sell houses? From what we've experienced, absolutely not!

Their job is to make money, not sell houses. It's all about priorities.

I've never heard an estate agent whose ambition and career plan wasn't defined in terms of income.

The objective of every business is to make money; estate and letting agents are no exception. However, the means by which agents make their money is through the sale and letting of houses, so how can you state otherwise?

Maybe I should provide a background to my comments. We bought a house in 2009 and completely renovated it throughout to a high standard. It was first placed on the market for sale in 2010 and eventually sold earlier this year. We tried three estate agents and not one actively marketed the house: it didn't appear in any property publications and was not prominently displayed in their shop windows despite the assurances that it would be. In total we had only eight viewings in four years. I appreciate the economy was (and still is) in a bad way, but it wasn't that bad?

Since May we've been living in a rented property while looking for another to renovate. As cash buyers with no chain we're now in the ideal position to snap up a house if one is placed on the market. I've spoken to the agents in person and by phone more times I can count explaining what we are looking for, yet in spite of this we've only been contacted a handful of times by agents covering Swansea and the Gower, and most of those emails and calls were concerning new-builds...

Only Tuesday I called into an estate agent and described what we're after for the umpteenth time and yesterday spent several hours trawling through Rightmove, Prime Location, Zoopla etc... and lo and behold, a cottage “in need of some TLC” (shorthand for bulldozing) new on the market by the very agent I had just spoken to the day before but failed to mention it!

Another agent recently told me over the phone that they do not contact buyers! I incredulously enquired why and he replied that they're too busy. Even the rental house we're currently in I found myself by pure chance.

I do look online for houses every day; though personally I believe it should be the job of the agents to find the buyers, not the other way around. After all they're charging their clients enough.

As you can probably tell I'm a bit cheesed off with estate agents right now! Time to drive round and look at some houses I've found advertised online.

Mark

PS I mean no offence to anyone who is, or knows someone who is an estate agent. My comments solely reflect on the feckless nitwits who work around here. I'm sure they're wonderful in other places! (hammer)

That just proves they must be either stupid, lazy or already have enough money thank you very much. That they charge selling fees but do no marketing, esp. to known potential buyers is more than a little puzzling.

Time to contact Phi; & Kirsty ? (hammer)

Regards Keith

ps When we moved to Devon last year we found the local agents keen and eager to sell us one of their properties (even a three storey bungalow I kid you not  )
