Browsing through the Collectables>Tools>Carpentry/Woodworking section of a well-known auction site (as some of us do from time to time) I noticed this:

The seller described it as a dovetail gauge, and I'm sure it's not, but I can't work out what it really is, despite an annoying feeling that I may have seen one online somewhere before.

It's made by Monument Tools, who (as far as I know) have only ever made tools for the plumbing trade, as they still do, so I think it's not a woodworking tool at all. But what is it?

Ah I see its a marking out tool bet they were not used a lot  Well done on the piccy.
Certainly don't remember seeing that tool or even a set of dividers in class.

Well spotted Jim funny how something can be a mystery and others know exactly what it is.

Brilliant work!

Thanks guys - the collective brain triumphs again!

To the contrary, surely it would would be most odd if everybody's interests and knowledge were identical?
