New to scrolling, need advice

Hi, I'm new to scrolling since Santa brought me a scrollsaw last week. I've had a little play around with it but I'm eager to get going properly. Can anyone tell me the best woods to start with and if there are any good web sites to buy things like blades etc. Also can I get the wood from a normal timber merchant or are there specialist wood suppliers

Good ol'e Santa :lol:
The fun starts here !! Try with plywood first , any old ply will do ,
but the best stuff is baltic birch or any good quality stuff , not the 3 ply that comes from B&Q , more "plys" the better,
any of the harder woods will cut nice , the softer types are not so easy , they tend to clog up in the blade teeth , ie. use a blade with less tpi .
Try www.scrollsawer.com for good info, very helpful and a lot of good links, flying dutchman blades will also be linked from there, also a very helpful site.
don't know if they still have them , but Sawbird blades were avalable at
www.turners-retreat.co.uk
try a local timber merchant for ply etc , also cabinet makers scrap bins
are usfull places to look in !!!. 8)

Hi and welcome to the forums. As well as the advice from Frank, the search button at the top of the page may be helpful since this question gets asked fairly regularly and there is some good advice in those earlier threads. You might also want to look at ones dealing with blade choice too - this will be your next question I suspect :wink:

Hi journeyman and welcome.

When looking for wood, don't forget MDF which is perfectly good medium for many scrollsaw applications especially where you're likely to paint the finished piece anyway, such as most segmentation work. It's also a cheap material for practise.

Whoooop's i forgot about mdf , #-o it's nice to cut , but please be aware of the DUST!!! it ain't good for you , i use a hoover to suck it straight from the blade .
