I really don't know what to make of him (well, 'fun' obviously).
A few years ago a couple of documentaries came out about his treatment of locals (and a beautiful bit of Scottish coast) in Aberdeenshire, when they got in the way of his commercial interests. And he's been bankrupted several times, IIRC, making him far from the business success his adherents claim. And his present fortune came through backing with Russian money (IIRC, again). That's not very patriotic! And it's not very pleasant either.
The Americans have only themselves to blame though: either choice at the end of the process was horrible, and they should have had a "go back and start again" option on the ballot paper. For decades there, as well as here, people have said, "I don't do politics." This has let all sorts of scum rise to the top.
Churchill said, "Democracy is the very worst form of government, until you consider the alternatives." The problem is people don't get involved, by which I mean the 'silent majority' is bigger and more silent than ever before. People accept the creeps that do get elected, and thus it continues.
Will Trump survive? It depends on what he does, not from the perspective of the people, but those financing him. He's been 'in bed' in the past with some pretty unsavoury types. And we know the arms industry in the USA is desperate for some 'field testing' (it always is). There's probably enough dirt on him out there for impeachment at some point -- the question is whether he's too useful to too powerful people.
Geopolitically, I've been nervous abuot China's behaviour in the South China Sea for a long time. It's good old-fashioned imperialism by gunboat. All of its near neighbours resent it; it's been slated in the UN and the international courts, but it continues.
Originally, analysts suggested this was about oil under those waters, but if it succeeds, China will control the shipping lanes from Korea, Taiwan (which it still wants to re-annexe) and Japan to Western markets. I suspect the ultimate plan is to start "inspecting" cargos, with a view to diminishing those countries' trade in finished goods, in favour of the PRC. It also wants to isolate Taiwan further.
None of the affected states have strong enough military to pose any serious threat to these operations - post WWII most have been pacifist. Only the USA has a big enough force in the region to do anything (but its own trade is trans-Pacific, so less affected).
Obama's (Clinton's) policies have been a disaster for long-term global peace, and ignoring this problem has made matters significantly worse, as China has significantly strengthened it's position militarily, whilst Obama sat on his hands.
The question is whether Trump has the diplomatic skills to deal with this, and whether China could ever be in any mood to back down peacefully. I seriously doubt both things.
So will Trump last the year? Lying to the US people over war in the South China Sea might be grounds for successful impeachment. He has form on this, so much so that you wonder if he understands the difference between truth and lies (many sociopaths are highly successful, incidentally). It might be the only thing that forces the hand of a Republican Congress and Senate. But the Chinese have the luxury of stability in military intelligence, economic and military power, and the opportunity to debate and analyse out of the glare of the media.
I give him a year or so, and, assuming there is no nuclear exchange, I'm wondering what President Pense will be like. I have no idea, but probably much better than Trump.
My personal worry is that one of my children and his family live on the US West coast...
