Hi there,

Ive recently got my hands an old chisel but I'm struggling to find any information on the the maker of said chisel. On the front it says 'THOS SMITH & CO HALIFAX' (the H in THOS even be an M) and on the back it says 'HAND FORGED'. I was just wondering if anyone in this forum can shed any light on the maker.

Thanks a bunch

Gaz

According to BSSM, Thomas Smith & Co were builders' ironmongers and tool merchants at Broad St Halifax from 1897 to 1953 or later.
The chisel would have been made for them to sell as an "own brand," almost certainly by a Sheffield manufacturer.

Thank you very much Andy. Also what does 'BSSM' stand for ?

BSSM is British Saws and Saw Makers - the standard reference work on saws. Many companies who put their names on saws also sold other tools, so it's useful as a general reference to tool makers and suppliers whose products have outlived them.
