Hi everyone,
I'm still fairly new to woodworking but I really enjoy it. I mostly do wood turning, small bowls, spindles, eggs, etc. I am in the US Air Force and get to travel a lot. I recently went to Crete, Greece and picked up a ton of olive wood and was able to mill it down this past week. I made some nice flat pieces in the band saw on base...roughly an inch thick, 8 inches across and about 16 inches long. I want to make a platter out of one of them. It still has bark on the outside and I think that adds to character, but i'm wondering how long that will last before it starts to chip off or what not. My plan is to take plank, rout out a 2 inch indenture in the middle in which I will place an olive bowl and have it as a chip/dip/cheese plate. My main question is if I leave the bark on, how should I seal it, if at all? Also, i'm used to turning platters round, this will keep its initial shape, which I think is rustic and nice (and the merchants down in greece had them like this, minus the bark). Also, should I sand it, with what grit, and seal/oil it with what?
Any advice would be appreciated, I can take pictures and post them if necessary, I'm not sure I explained this very well. Thanks in advance and great to be part of the club!
