i like the pad and pen holder, is that 'just' a square of wood with a tube attached?

Yes, pretty much. It's a rectangle of oak with chamfered edges, with a closed bottom tube screwed to it. I had planned on making a tubular pen case, but it went a bit pear shaped, and one half of it ended getting used for this... Necessity being the mother of invention and all that... Quite please with the result overall, though.
