1. possibly Black walnut if it's fairly soft like English Walnut
2. Sycamore or maple
3.Yew
4.Hard to tell from the photo - maybe Beech?
5.Mahogany or maybe Sapele?
7. Oak
8. If its very very hard - Mulga
9. Some kind of Rosewood
12. Yew

My suggestions...

1. Black walnut (light weight) or Mgurure (heavy)?
2. Beech
3. Yew
4. Oak possibly if the stripes across the end-grain are medularies rather than bandsaw marks
5. Sapele or Utile?
6. Beech?
7. Oak
8. Possibly Mgurure?
9. Looks quite like Indian Rosewood?
10. Possibly Aussie Jarrah or Redgum if very hard/heavy, Sapele if soft/light?
11. Iroko?
12. Yew

chuck it in a bucket of water, if it sinks then it is most likely Lignum.

Kim,
Although you're right, remind me not to invite you into my woodstore when any wood needs identifying

Ok

No 1 has a density of approx 1g per cc

no 2 I compared to another piece of beech and the grain matches that.

No 3 Yew.

No 4 again comparing against known, its oak.

No 5 I think sapele

No 6 is red hardwood with a density of .77 g/cc end grain photo

No 7 is a red with density of .76 g/cc see new photo

and

No 8 sinks but so does 9 ?

No 9 again with comparison, I can go with indian rosewood

No 10 has a density of .77 g/cc ,

No 11 has a density of .76 g/cc, end grain

No 12 yew

That's some collection.

Hehe, made me chuckle! :)

Apart from that you could take up wet turning! Not that Lignum would come to much harm, it's practically waterproof.
