My friend came round a couple of weeks ago after a successful round of the skips and brought me some lengths off a mahogany door and some windows. I am surprised at the difference in the quality of the timber from the same door. The length that had been the handle side was very hard and red whereas the hinge side was much lighter both in colour and weight.

There was enough to make 4 tables but I only had tiles for 3 of them. All will be given away for raffle prizes for our golf club and I give one to a local dance class for their raffle proceeds go to the local hospital.

Hope you like them Alan.

Eek! For a moment I thought you'd nicked the tiles from our hall - I had to go check!

Absolutely brilliant job there, and all recycled materials, you say.
They ought to sell a lot of tickets, tiling is excellent too!

Thanks for your comments and just to let you know I've jut been given the top off an oak drop leaf table. Oval in shape about 6ft x 3ft..
I don't have a clue where he gets it all from but it's gratefully received.

Now what can I make with this ??

Alan.

Lovely tables there, I recently saw a lovely small coffee table in a furniture store at £600. It was labelled as a "Collectors Table" and was similar size shape as yours but had a glass top that would open up and the inside was divided into 4" square recesses and flocked finished so you could display your trinkets (they had some fancy shells and Ammonites in theirs but you could put anything in) it had a hidden hinged top complete with a lock. I haven't seen one before but liked the design and might have a go at making one myself using some reclaimed Oak.
Cheers
Brian

[What are you tiling on? Are you doing it with ordinary tile adhesive?
/quote]
The tile is sitting on 5mm ply which is fitted into a groove inside the top.
It's normal tile adhesive, I use a tiling comb and put the adhesive on to the ply. I have left enough room for about a 2mm bed.
There is 3mm gap around the edges of the tile which is then filled with tile grout.

Alan.
