Millers Falls No.5 missing springs from chuck

This drill is in quite good condition but the chuck appears to be missing some springs as the "teeth" rattle around inside it. Please does anyone have a photo or drawing of a dismantled chuck so that I can see what the springs look like and try to make some?

Thanks, Andy. The WK Fine Tools site has the patent for Ryther's chuck of 1922, showing the internal details:

Now I just need some suitably springy wire and a third hand to put it back together. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks to you all for the useful information and links. I have made some springs cut from large safety pins. It took several attempts to get the shape just right. The photo below shows one of the unsuccessful attempts.

I also made the interesting discovery that the end of the handle unscrews to reveal a storage space for bits.

Safety pins aren't springy enough I would have thought (they're mild steel) but anything's better than the jaws rattling around loose in the shell!

The pins I used were considerably harder to snip than paper clips. The springs work OK up to now but if they don't last I'll look for some other material.

Deffo wasn't firing on all cylinders yesterday! I read safety pin and my brain pictured a paper clip

Question: are "Rhyther's" chucks the same as "Protected spring" chucks. Looking through old catalogs seems to suggest Rhyther's was one patent of a protected spring chuck.

Out of interest, how did you shape the springs? I can myself needing to do this at some point.

I'm sorry I don't know if Ryther's are protected spring chucks but I'd be interested to find out. I am new to chuck technology and all I have learned is from the links above.

I used needle nose pliers to shape the springs.
