Has anyone purchased a new Maxi 1 lathe, and if so did you have any problems with the lathe setting it up.

Regards

Hi Liam

I did but its sorted now, I had to change the 30mA earth fault breaker, as the Varispeed controller EMF filter capacitor's on initial leak to earth, which trip the earth fault breaker.

Turned a nice oak burr bowl this afternoon, very please with the lathe and its ease of use. Its my first large varispeed lathe and the belts and vari speed controls take a bit of getting used to. I bought a Digi Laser Non Contact Tachometer (cheap on ebay) to allow me to get to grips with it.

Thanks for the offer, very kind of you.

What chuck are you using??

Regards

Aden

Thanks Woody, its nice to be turning again. Hopefully all should be OK with the machine now.

Take care mate, give me call if you need anything.

Kind regards

Aden

Hi Aden,

I'm using a Versachuck from Toolpost - it is what it says - versatile!
However, I must say that I am tempted by the new Evolution from Axminster... but it is a bit more costly

I'm using a K10, which I must say I am pleasantly surprised with.

I have also pre ordered the Evolution from Axminster, but they have failed on delivery dates twice now, which is disappointing. I talked to them last week and they informed me they were having problems with the manufacturing process. I am in no rush, but if I didn't pick up the K10 I would be in quite a pickle, new lathe no chuck.

Also I have a just received a 11/4X8tpi back plate for my old multistar chuck, it allows me to use the wide array of attachments to the chuck system I have from my last lathe, I bought them in the late eighties and it has stood the test of time.

Woody kindly allowed me a try on his Maxi with the versa chuck, and I thought it to be a good solid unit.

Kind regards

Aden

One advantage of the Versa Chuck is the fact that it uses standard ISO back plates the same as the original Axminster Super Precision chuck.
Changing lathes just means a change of back plate not the whole chuck system if you change lathe spindle standards.

In fact I have just done exactly that with the two chucks I bought from Woody, changed from 1-1/4" X 8 that woodys lathe used to 1-/1/2" X 6 for my Poolwood.

The ISO backplate is the norm for metal lathe chucks and more than accurate enough for use on wood lathes without any of the fine tuning that may be needed on a metal lathe.
