It's not a bad looking ensemble.
I think that the bench without the front stretcher might be prone to racking.
No doubt, a compromise the author made in order to fit the cabinet underneath.
If I was building this, I'd make the cabinet a structural component of the bench, thus making it more sturdy.
Reducing the cabinet height would allow for better use of holdfasts.
