with my new lathe came a nova chuck with a couple of jaws, one set is ok for holding pen blanks but does leave some marking on the end held, i have been told i can get a proper set of jaws for the nova chucks especially for pen blank, aparently it comes as only 2 jaws? does any one know where i may be able to pick up a set of these as i have some expensive blanks coming and dont really wish to damage any of them if it can be helped?

Not any help regarding source of Pen Jaws but a query as to why any slight marks on the external of a pen blank held in jaws for drilling the bore should be a problem for the finished item.

Surely any surface damage is going to be removed when the blanks are mounted on a mandrel and turned to size.

I know some turners who make considerable quantities of pens swear by the specialist pen jaws but personally for the few I make I could not justify either the expense or the time taken to change them out on the chuck.
And to be honest not relevant for me as I use a pillar drill.

Basically the jaws need a reasonably prepared (square and true) blank and if you make your own and care to spend the time ensuring this then they are fine, I'm afraid my blanks salvaged from interesting band saw offcuts and slung in a storage bin to dry themselves out and perform whatever gyrations they care to perform in the process would rarely fit the bill.

although i use pen blanks i dont use them to make pens with so i am free turning everything, not using mandrels.
