Long distance wood collection

Well this is the first of my latest acquisition of wood to boost the pile.

The wife came in two weeks ago telling me there is a notice up on a lamp post lest than 100feet around the corner stating that the road will be closed during the day for 2 weeks while trees are cut down. Anyway Monday the workmen started lopping the tops and getting all of the smaller pieces off ready for the trucks to be cut down.
A gentle walk around the corner and a chat to the man in charge and the outcome was that today the first of many pieces ended up in my garden.
This is Ash and there is Oak and Field maple to follow. So I will add photo's as it arrives.
Here is today's small pieces as this is off one tree with the main trunk still to be felled.
As you can see I have made a start on preparing them since the photo the ends have been sealed except the larger lump in the car which is now sitting on the patio ready for the chain saw.

These two pieces hopefully show the nice piece of flame and could make a very interesing couple of bowls

The lump still to be carved up the small branch coming off of the main trunk is about 9" diameter. So the rest of the trunk below this will give some nice sized bowls or hollow forms

This is the large lump of ash from yesterdays haul now cut in half they are 21" X 18"

And again today's haul this time some Oak the slabs are 18" square and still more to come

Because of the rain yesterday I never got the wood cut ready for the next lot to arrive. So a knock on the door and the guys chopping down the trees had brought another load around so had to pile it on the Oak.
This lot is Ash and there is still more to come. All of this will be piled up and burnt if I had not taken the opportunity to ask for it.
There are some great pieces which will produce some lovely feather effect when turned. As can be seen in one of the photo's some of it is 16" diameter. Today before they arrived I modified my cutting horse so that I could cut most of this. Hopefully will get some of it cut tomorrow and sealed.
Shame the great grandson is not here tomorrow as he will be great for painting the ends he is only 4 but enjoys doing that and makes a good job as well

Another day cutting logs. While all around everyone is having snow we have not had any so next best thing make my own this is what I call woodturners snow. The first picture shows how much I have got left to do and the second the wood which has been cut so far. In total there are 48 pieces some as 16"+ across some I may even get more than one blank from. And the last photo is one of the pieces showing the grain

Due to a late start after a visit to the hospital midday not a lot done in the converting the pile but did manage to get another 25 pieces cut which brings the total to 73 pieces, and there is still more to cut as well as being told that another load will be delivered tomorrow. Not sure what wood it will be until it arrives they will also take away 12 sacks of the shavings from the chainsawing

Nearly there just a few bits to cut down to size.

The total so far is 100 pieces which I need to convert into bowl or hollow form blanks as some of these will make two or more. Sorry about the photo quality.

Yippee the last of the logs are now cut down to a manageable size and given a coat of emulsion as a temporary measure. Just managed to get them cut except three small pieces which I had to use an axe on to split down the middle, run out of petrol and as I don't know when the next lot will arrive best way to leave the chainsaw.
Next job will be to cut into rounds where needed and sealed and dated/weighed.

This brings the total to 128 pieces

Just the cutting into rounds will take a while. Will be replacing the blade on the bandsaw tomorrow in preporation for that.
