Oh dear... £400,000 and this is the best they could come up with...

This is the official London 2012 Olympics Logo. What do you think?

I much prefer this one

or even this one

Shameful isn't it.

It's Wolf Olins it will therefore be
1 expensive
2 hip n trendy
3 beyond your understanding.

well it might as well be cos it will never get changed. Within hours of it's publication there were already several thousand signatories on a petition against it. There are currently some 31 000 signatories here

http://www.gopetition.co.uk/petitions/change-the-london-2012-logo.html
and

and several thousand more on the number 10 petitions site, though it's so badly designed I couldn't actually find a link to link :)

Hey ho.

Its abysmal. I'm amazed that there were so many better ones on the BBC web site within hours of the launch. It should have been a competition with the top ten voted for by the public. The 25p phone call could have been put to the fund.

BTW Remember for our £400,000 we have four different colours and a moving one - whoopy do

Absolute rubbish, as the TV has shown today they could have had several hundred if not thousands of designs far more readable an incorporating the symbolism of Date, Place, Olympics, Sport for free had they asked the public at large.

I guess if you have fought hard to get the event here you have to make sure you spend as much of the money where it shouts loudest. :x

i am quite supprised that no one has thought of the epileptics as the moving one will set them off.

woodbutcher

If, I was the 'designer', It would have looked something like this:

One version has already been pulled for that reason,
I personally find the flashing TV images disturbing and cannot assimilate the individual moving images and have to look away until they have settled.

There are already several reported serious problems for some suffering from epilepsy, so for that reason alone there will undoubtedly have to be changes. What is surprising is that it does not appear to meet Ofcom's guidelines for flashing TV images and the effects on epilepsy. If this is true, it's a serious cock-up by Wolf Olins who should have had someone checking out such basic things. Or maybe that would have cost a bit extra........

Cheers

I don't really think money should be a consideration, £400,000 will be just a drop in the ocean by the time they have finished.
My worry is whether or not we can actually pull this whole thing off. A good friend of mine within the london underground development team is already saying it won't be ready in time, and if the transport infrastructure isn't in place then the whole thing will be a shambles, remember Atlanta.

Senior,

You ain't wrong there!
I was invited to be part of the construction safety team but declined.
Two people I know who did join are already job hunting as they say the construction schedule is about 4 years behind where it ought to be. These are harded pros from big construction projects and know what they are talking about.

Absolute pants!

However, I seem to remember reading something yesterday about the design being privately funded. presumably by firms who expect to make a killing on merchandising. If so then at least we didn't pay for it.

£400K is a lot for sure, but I can't help thinking Olins must be rubbing their hands with glee at all the complaints - they'll probably get paid again to redesign the thing

The funniest comment I've heard about it was on Radio2 yesterday -
the logo looks as though it's a woman with a Lisa Simpson hairstyle bending down in front of a man (whose head is just out of the picture) giving him a **** ***

It does as well.

well I'd love to vote but can't find the "couldn't give a damn " option.
Good old British self loathing, we've got another 5 years of this to come.
Wouldn't it be nice if these 30k people who take time out of they're day to track down these petitions instead used that time to visit an elderly person living alone, or something else constructive. John

.......I'll just go and see if Gladys needs her grass cuttin....

 :?: It's nothing to do with self-loathing. I couldn't be happier that we have the Olympics, and I am sure if we get our butts in gear we can have everything ready in time. I hope that we have learnt our lessons from the Wembley fiasco. It doesn't matter how cynical you are about this country, it doesn't change the fact that the logo sucks.

And as for the people who track down these petitions. At least they are actively trying to get things done and get their voice heard. To be honest mate, it's the 'couldn't give a damn' attitude that brings this country down.

Apparently the construction side is already almost 4 years behind where it should be, so maybe it'll be London 2020 eventually? Lovely thing, hindsight...

How have we managed to get four years behind schedule when we only won the bid two years ago?

As projected completion date moves forward you get further and further behind :)
Similarly "one step forward, two steps back" might mess you up as well.

As for signing petitions when we should all be out mowing Granny Hilda's grass I would have thought those hunting out petitions or (even worse :) ) starting them are demonstrating a social conscience that might also see them helping Hilda with her herbacious borders.

Cheers Mike

(I work for a consultancy who specialise in branding)

Now I don't like the logo, and I think maybe the fees were a little high. But we don't know details of the scope of work and I don't think the criticism about Wolff Olins fees are fair. I'm sure everyone realises there will have been a teeny weeny bit more work than just a logo for £400 000. In today's society with advances in computers everyone reckons they can be a designer.

When commenting on their fees just think about the threads on here about woodworkers being undervalued and not being able to charge their actual time spent.
