Over the weekend I discovered that the two 12v 7Ah sealed lead acid batteries in my APC UPS were red hot and bulging....(sorry if that sounds a bit like the title of some sort of dodgy movie  ). Clearly duff.

My question is: is this something that one might expect to happen after about 3-4 years or more of use or does it indicate something wrong with the UPS itself?

I've measured the charging voltage and it's 25v dc with a ripple (as measured on my Avo) of about 1v and that sounds reasonable (batteries are connected in series).

I contacted APC who said that as the unit was 10 years old they recommended me trading up..but on checking the upgrade costs I'd be shelling out over £100 (as it's a reasonably chunky 700Va UPS). Two batteries will cost me about £20 each but I don't want to throw away £40 if they are going to get beaten up by the UPS. Hence my question.

At least they didn't explode unlike Dell/Sony
