Although I must add that I have found that IE doesn't handle transparency correctly with PNG images anyways - but it should 'dull down' the halo. Although the other way - render the image with the background colour of the banner area may work out better More cross browser compatibility

That was true for IE6, but even Microsoft eventually got it right.

I agree that pre-compositing with the RIGHT background would be "better" than the current one, but the background in this case is a vignette (or fade) which makes things trickier.
Alpha is the only proper solution.
