I am thinking of purchasing the jet short bed lathe as an upgrade. It is rated at 2.2 kW ( 12 amps). Does anyone use one of these lathes and was any special electricity supply required over and above normal household circuit?

Thanks for any advice.

Two points:

A chap from our turning club uses the model below on a household supply, no problems.

I myself have a Startrite planar/thicknesser which is rated 16amp supply running off a household supply without problems.

I have always plugged bigger electrical stuff, welder etc, in the electric cooker socket, which I believe is the biggest
source in the homestead.

the cooker socket is traditionally 30 amp but mine's a hell of a long way from the garage :)

Many of these tools that are rated 16amp only draw that large current on start up to overcome the inertia of heavy components like the knife block in a planar. Once they're spinning and have momentum they draw far less current. Thus if you can get them off the start line they're usually fine from 13amp supplies. My planar has never once tripped the box even when its not the only tool drawing current.

that reminds me of the Christmas (well late November when I bought my first lathe). It was ruddy freezing out in the garage so I assembled it in the kitchen with the plan to move it once done and then ended up using it for nearly 3 weeks before SWMBO stopped seeing the funny side.

Very understanding she was....right up until the thin film of dust started coating the Christmas tree :)
