I used to know a groundskeeper who used to cut down trees into cords and leave them near an access on the grounds in the hope that they would vanish.
They always did and it saved him a job of finding a home for them.

A 40 mm saw tooth forstner bit does the trick for me and accomodates most tealight candles.

Noggsy-thanks for the offer but it is a good excuse to add to the tool pile I use a couple of times :-D

Nigel - thanks. Will be liking in IKEA for the glass holders, and may go from there.

I did a fire test, it had Danish oil on (I think, can't recall the name) and held a flame to it, over 15 seconds it scorched it, but didn't light. Whilst I prefer the candle in the wood look without a holder, having the holder makes it easier to clean, stops potential fires and looks more finished rather than a hole in wood. However not sure how it would look in an angled cut item.

And 12 for £2 from IKEA, hardly a major loss!
