Identification of wood please

Hi all

I recently picked up two planks of wood from a double glazing place

Anyone know what wood it is please?

It has an odd odour to it after planing the many layers of paint off

Looks like some kind of pine - possibly from North America - commonly used in Edwardian and Victorian houses for most 'ordinary' joinery e.g. skirting boards, window sills etc. etc.. If you weren't already aware, the dust you created from the paint will very likely contain lead. Cheers, W2S

PS the smell is probably the linseed oil that formed the basis of the paint, combined with the smell of the pine itself - slightly 'cat-pee'!

I did suspect pine but wasn't sure

Looked like an old wainscot , nice wood though

I planed it off outside with a mask on but thanks for the warning

The scent is almost earthy and quite strong, you would think after all these years it would lose the scent, it was unpainted on the inside

Just wish I could find some more now ;-)

"earthy and strong" you say. Could be hemlock then.
