4 sliding dovetails holding the boxwood insert in this fillister plane.
super tight fit.
19th century planemakers certainly had some kind of production facility (ie jigs) for doing this and cnc wasn't an option.

As it happens, I have today bought a copy of Salaman's Dictionary of Woodworking Tools which has quite a detailed explanation.
The short answer, not surprisingly, is that the dovetails were planed, by hand!

If you want to try it, you'll need:

  • A rebate plane
    A grooving plane
    A dovetail plane
    A tongueing plane
    A grooved sole rebate plane
    and a bevelled shoulder plane!

Skilled, weren't they?

That's a top-of-the-range moving fillister plane - a splendid and practical tool, and it looks in good condition.

This is unusual, become practical tools get a lot of use, and a lot of wear.

Nice!

If it were dovetailed all the way that would be impressive, but I expect that they aren't all that deep?
