Hi,

Making kitchen worktops from kiln dried Maple planks (8ft x 5”x2”) that have some shakes.

After applying Danish Oil to a test piece, more oil absorbed at the shake, causing a noticeable darkened area, about the size of postage stamp.

Do you know how I can reduce / prevent this unwanted effect?

Would a small amount of sanding sealing around the shake or some filler would work?

Many thanks :)

I did some worktops out of 6x2 maple a couple of years ago and had just the same problem. I solved it by filling the shakes with 2-pack filler and it worked a treat.

Maple is a pipper to oil though. It is so hard in places that the oil doesn't penetrate at all, yet softer elsewhere, making it very difficult to get an even finish.

For kitchen worktops however, there's no real alternative.
