I am coming to the end of building a yew coffee table which needs to be ridiculously hard wearing.

Are there any dos and don'ts with yew?

Is it similar to any other woods in the respect of finishing?

Any recommendations for a suitable finishing product?

I used Chestnut finishing oil on a coffee table not too long ago-it has stood up very well! As the finish is "in" the timber any dents or dings don't crack the finish off.
Hope this helps

Some years ago I finished a yew dining room table in Ronseal polyurethane satin varnish. First coat diluted about 10% with white spirit and a further 3 or 4 coats (I forget how many) lightly sanded between coats. The table has stood up well to daily use although the top usually has a cover over it. The legs have darkened a little but have taken the daily battering from children and pets quite well.
